·         Trainings in WBC labs (continuing): Dr. Milena Popova and Dr. Boryana Trusheva  from the Institute of Organic Chemistry with Centre of Phytochemistry – staying for two weeks in April 2010 in the Chromatography Laboratory in Skopje and worked on characterization of phenolic components in propolis

·         Second annual report submitted!

·         Presentation of CHROMPAB-ANTIOXIDANT at WIRE – Week of Innovative Regions in Europe in Granada, Spain, organized by Spanish Presidency, the Ministry of Science and Innovation will co-organise, together with the European Commission (download poster)

·         5th FOOD-Cluster meeting and project meeting in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 5-7 March 2010

·         Trainings in WBC labs (continuing): Jean-Marc Souquet from the Joint research unit “Science for Oenology”, National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA-SPO), Montpellier, France, stayed in the Chroma­tography Laboratory in Skopje, Macedonia (FSM-MK) for two weeks in Feb-March 2010 and worked on characterization polyphenols in berry fruits (strawberries)

·         Workshop for regional networking of researchers from the region working in various aspects of antioxidant components in food by participation of 14 groups (download brochure with data of all groups)

·         Trainings in WBC labs (continuing): Dr. Kalina Alipieva from the Institute of Organic Chemistry with Centre of Phytochemistry – stayed two weeks in November 2009 in the Chromatography Laboratory in Skopje and worked on characterization of phenolic components in mountain tea

·         Workshop for dissemination: Advanced applications of mass spectrometry at the Institute of Chemistry, FSM-MK, 24 June 2009, attended by researchers and PhD students from the Institute of chemistry (FSM-MK) and from other faculties, with the following presentations:

-     New developments for the analysis of plant polyphenols (Dr. Veronique Cheynier, researcher from the Joint research unit Science for Oenology, INRA, Montpellier, France)

-     Endotoxins studied by separation methods and mass spectrometry (Dr. Ferenc Kilár, Full Professor in Bioanalysis, University of Pécs, Hungary)

  • Violeta Ivanova defended her PhD thesis dedicated to the first systematic research on the phenolic profile of Macedonian grapes and wines entitled: Development of methods of identification and quantification of phenolic compounds in wine and grape applying spectrophotometry, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry at the Institute of Chemistry, Faculty of Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje, Macedonia (15 October 2009)

·         Open days - September 2009 at the Chroma­tography Laboratory in Skopje, Macedonia (FSM-MK) and at the Food Control Laboratory in Niš, Serbia (FSM-S) attended by more than 50 interested colleagues from academia, governmental and business community in the reinforced laboratories for characterization of antioxidant food constituents

·         Workshop for dissemination: Seminar on Mass Spectrometry at the Institute of Chemistry, FSM-MK, 24 June 2009, attended by researchers and PhD students from the Institute of chemistry (FSM-MK) and from other faculties, with the following presentations:

-      Basics of mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (Marina Stefova)

-      New trends in mass spectrometry and applications (Angel Gil-Izquierdo, Department of Food Science and Technology, CEBAS-CSIC, Murcia, Spain)

-      Determination of the phenolic profile of the mountain tea from Macedonia using HPLC-ESI-MSn (Jasmina Petreska)

-     Identification of polyphenolic compounds in cultivated strawberries using HPLC-ESI-MSn (Marina Kajdžanoska)

·         WestBalkan Science day - Vienna 22 June 2009: A Matching Event for Researchers from Austria and the Western Balkan Countries attended by Dr. Marina Stefova where she participated in the WORKSHOP on Agro Food and exchanged experience with colleagues from Austria and the WBC region for funding opportunities for research in agro food area.

·         Short visit to Murcia 11-16 May 2009

-     Dr. Marina Stefova and Jasmina Petreska visited the Department of Food Science and Technology, National Centre for Scientific Research (CSIC-CEBAS), Murcia, Spain, and discussed activities within CHROMLAB-ANTIOXIDANT and future prospects with the colleagues researchers

-     They also attended the Young Scientists MeetingFuture Trends in Phytochemistry in the Global Era of Agri-Food and Health organized by Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CEBAS-CSIC) and The Phytochemical Society of Europe (PSE) http://www.cebas.csic.es/congreso/inicio.html, where two presentations (poster and oral presentation) of the obtained results of the joint research of the Macedonian and Spanish team within CHROMLAB-ANTIOXIDANT were given.

·         Research Connections, 7-8 May 2009 in Prague

-      FOOD CLUSTER presented at the Press briefing 14 on 8th May 2009 (http://ec.europa.eu/research/conferences/2009/rtd-2009/index_en.cfm?pg= press&show=briefing_14_food_cluster#briefing_14_food_cluster) and few projects including CHROMLAB-ANTIOXIDANT referred to as successful projects bringing Balkan and European regions together within this initiative

-      The coordinator Dr. Marina Stefova interviewed for the Research Connection 09 daily newspaper (issue 2, 8 may 2009, p. 4) with regards to Unlocking potential: The EU convergence regions explaining the objectives of CHROMLAB-ANTIOXIDANT and concluding “We are actually not only improving our infrastructure, but also competences because we have trained young researchers for that equipment and we hope that we will be more competitive for future projects”.

-      Jean Marc Souquet from the Joint research unit “Science for Oenology”, National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA-SPO), Montpellier, France, stayed in the Food Control Laboratory in Niš, Serbia (FSM-S) for two weeks in April 2009 and visited the Chroma­tography Laboratory in Skopje, Macedonia (FSM-MK) for three days

-      Dr. Ángel Gil Izquierdo from the Department of Food Science and Technology, National Centre for Scientific Research (CSIC-CEBAS), Murcia, Spain, stayed in the Chroma­tography Laboratory in Skopje, Macedonia (FSM-MK) for three weeks in July 2009
